Marcandier, who was a magistrate from Bourges, a city in central France, he wrote about hemp&#8217;s history, preparation, uses, and about\u00a0new methods of cultivation and manufacture. \u00a0There is a <a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/012403835\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">translated\u00a0version<\/a> in English which was published a few years later in 1764 and can be found online.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_chanvre-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5057\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_chanvre-2-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"houghton_chanvre 2\" width=\"273\" height=\"435\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_chanvre-2-188x300.jpg 188w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_chanvre-2-643x1024.jpg 643w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_chanvre-2.jpg 1589w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The range of bindings on these volumes is just as interesting as the content within it. \u00a0Houghton&#8217;s copy was in the best shape\u00a0bound in contemporary mottled calf with the edges stained red in addition to having having beautiful marbled end papers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5051\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"houghton_\" width=\"230\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/houghton_-1024x812.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Botany&#8217;s volume is similar to Houghton&#8217;s though its leather was in much poorer shape. \u00a0Though it lacked the marbled end papers,\u00a0this copy has a decorated spine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/botany_spine-e1411414611157.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5031 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/botany_spine-e1411414611157-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"botany_spine\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/botany_spine-e1411414611157-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/botany_spine-e1411414611157-576x1024.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Countway&#8217;s volume was the most\u00a0different as it wasn&#8217;t bound in leather at all, but in contemporary decorated paper wrappers featuring some sort of purple stamp\u00a0design. \u00a0Presumably at some point a custom box was made for it mimicking the original design with purple dots decorating\u00a0the box housing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_cover_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5033 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_cover_2-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"countway_cover_2\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_cover_2-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_cover_2-1024x816.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_cover_2.jpg 1956w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_box.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-5093\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_box-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"countway_box\" width=\"147\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_box-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_box-637x1024.jpg 637w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/countway_box.jpg 1184w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To look at any of these volumes of <em>Trait\u00e9 du chanvre<\/em> \/par M.
