{"id":3784,"date":"2014-06-12T13:53:19","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T17:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=3784"},"modified":"2014-06-12T13:53:19","modified_gmt":"2014-06-12T17:53:19","slug":"a-heavenly-cure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2014\/06\/12\/a-heavenly-cure\/","title":{"rendered":"A heavenly cure?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/01\/KIC_Image_00091.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/01\/KIC_Image_00091-173x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"421\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><em>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired <a href=\"http:\/\/hcl.harvard.edu\/libraries\/houghton\/collections\/modern\/santo_domingo.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Julio Mario Santo Domingo Collection<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>As you look at the cover of this pamphlet you might wonder what divine content might hide within its covers, well that would be&#8230; The Pink Pills!\u00a0 The <em>Pink Pills for Pale People<\/em> were introduced in 1886 by Dr. William Frederick Jackson and supposedly helped with anemia and fatigue.\u00a0 This type of product is known as a patent medicine or a compound that was both promoted and sold as a medical cure but was simply hucksterism at its finest.\u00a0 Patent medicine in its early days was known as <em>nostrum remedium<\/em>, or &#8220;our remedy&#8217; in Latin.\u00a0 It is especially misleading since these products are not actually patented, but trademarked.<\/p>\n<p>The promotion of patent medicines was one of the first major products highlighted by the advertising industry, and we can see many of the techniques pioneered by them still in use today.\u00a0 These types of &#8220;cures&#8221; were widespread in the early 20th-century and included liniments with snake oil, which is supposedly where the term <em>snake oil salesman<\/em> originates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/snakeoil.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4525 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/snakeoil-300x254.png\" alt=\"snakeoil\" width=\"300\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/snakeoil-300x254.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/snakeoil.png 378w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back cover depicting a Santa figure with his sack full of pink pills is particularly manipulative as the logo touts that they regenerate or refresh the blood and are a tonic for nerves.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/KIC_Image_0011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4531 size-medium\" style=\"margin-left: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/KIC_Image_0011-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/KIC_Image_0011-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/KIC_Image_0011-677x1024.jpg 677w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/05\/KIC_Image_0011.jpg 1687w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a>This item can be found at the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countway.harvard.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Countway Library<\/a> at the Harvard Medical School in Longwood.
