electricity in medical treatment is hardly a new concept, <a title=\"Guillaume Duchenne\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guillaume_Duchenne\">Guillaume Duchenne<\/a> was a French neurologist and developer of electrotherapy.\u00a0 Duchenne announced in 1855 that alternating current was more effective than a direct current for electrotherapeutic triggering of muscle contractions.\u00a0 One of the problems of direct current was the blistering of the skin due to the high voltage needed to stimulate the muscle, as well as the need to stop and restart the current with each contraction.\u00a0 What is fascinating about this particular 19th-century volume by John Ives are the conditions it claims electricity can cure.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/09\/electricity-as-a-medicine_000002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2992\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/09\/electricity-as-a-medicine_000002-300x258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/09\/electricity-as-a-medicine_000002-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/09\/electricity-as-a-medicine_000002-1024x883.jpg 1024w, chilblains are all listed in the book as complaints that electricity can remediate.\u00a0 Hiccups and persistent yawning are also included as pesky problems which according to the text can be solved by putting the negative [electrical node] &#8220;<em>under the ear and the positive by the seventh rib for five minutes, using a current from four to six cells<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/09\/electricity-as-a-medicine_000005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2994\" electrotherapy is accepted in the field of rehabilitation and the <a title=\"American Physical Therapy Association\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Physical_Therapy_Association\">American Physical Therapy Association<\/a> acknowledges its use in tissue repair, pain management, joint mobility,
