{"id":2603,"date":"2014-09-04T10:11:31","date_gmt":"2014-09-04T14:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=2603"},"modified":"2014-09-04T10:11:31","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T14:11:31","slug":"british-pop-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2014\/09\/04\/british-pop-art\/","title":{"rendered":"British pop art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired <a href=\"http:\/\/hcl.harvard.edu\/libraries\/houghton\/collections\/modern\/santo_domingo.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Julio Mario Santo Domingo Collection<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/07\/KIC_Image_0003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-4747\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/07\/KIC_Image_0003-265x300.jpg\" alt=\"KIC_Image_0003\" width=\"415\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/07\/KIC_Image_0003-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/07\/KIC_Image_0003-906x1024.jpg 906w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gerald Laing was an artist that was part of\u00a0the British Pop movement in the 1960s and remains one of the\u00a0most well-known today. \u00a0His work in this period was typically a\u00a0painting of a reproduced image often a drag racer, skydiver, astronaut, or starlet. \u00a0One of his most famous pieces is a painting from a newspaper photograph of Brigitte Bardo, which sold at Christie&#8217;s in February 2014 for just under $1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/bb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4972\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/bb.jpg\" alt=\"bb\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/bb.jpg 180w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/bb-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Laing was deeply influenced by the experiences of William Burroughs in the Amazonian rainforest in search of &#8216;Ayahuasca&#8217; the hallucinogenic vine with the active ingredient Dimethyltriptamine (D.M.T.) \u00a0This beautiful volume published in 1969 is a result of that influence, it is illustrated with 23 screenprints by Laing and\u00a0the text was written by\u00a0Galina Valentina\u00a0Golikova. \u00a0This deluxe edition of DMT 42 is\u00a0no. 50 out of the 210 copies produced and each print is signed by Laing. \u00a0It comes in a\u00a0soft-cover book with silver wrappers that is housed in a claret\u00a0corduroy case. \u00a0The color screenprints throughout the volume are very indicative of Laing&#8217;s British Pop inclinations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4965\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/KIC_Image_0006-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"KIC_Image_0006\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/KIC_Image_0006-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/KIC_Image_0006-730x1024.jpg 730w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Golikova who wrote the text for DMT 42 was actually Laing&#8217;s second wife. \u00a0He ended up doing a sculptural series on her entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geraldlaing.com\/index.php\/work\/galinaseries_artwork\/galina_i\/\" target=\"_blank\">Galina I to X<\/a>\u00a0from 1973 to 1980. \u00a0Laing states that he experienced an epiphany at\u00a0<span style=\"color: #222222\">Charles Sargeant Jagger\u2019s great First World War Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in England, which led to t<\/span>he Galina Series. \u00a0It marked a new method for Laing who had previously only worked with sheet metal but began sculpting in clay and then casting\u00a0in bronze during this period.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/cr290_galina_i_hq1_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-4967\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/cr290_galina_i_hq1_600-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"cr290_galina_i_hq1_600\" width=\"324\" height=\"407\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To see more examples of Laing&#8217;s work in DMT 42 \/[text] by G.
