Compiled primarily by collector <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=UyXPAAAAMAAJ&amp;pg=PP112&amp;lpg=PP112&amp;dq=daniel+b.+fearing+harvard&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=PzA4jNLFoj&amp;sig=X8zZSH7esBz4li1InrIAX65qyH0&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=_EqmUfTQKYrL0wH314DgAQ&amp;ved=0CEQQ6AEwAw\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Butler Fearing<\/a> (Harvard 1882), the bookplate collection is organized roughly by subject, which include Fearing\u2019s favorite collecting topics, fish and watercraft. The groups of bookplates that have been uploaded to date can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/houghtonmodern\/sets\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, on the Modern department&#8217;s Flickr page.<\/p>\n<p>More interesting, perhaps, to Harvard affiliates, is the collection of the bookplates of Harvard graduates (who were, at the time they were collected, solely men). Included are the bookplates of several early graduates of Harvard College, including Elisha Cooke (1657) and Nicholas Lynde (1690):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Cooke.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2270\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Cooke-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Cooke-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Cooke.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Lynde.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2271\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Lynde-300x135.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Lynde-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Lynde.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some recognizable names are included, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/houghtonmodern\/8658584904\/in\/set-72157633231044358\/lightbox\/\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Wadsworth Longfellow<\/a> (honorary degree, 1859), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/houghtonmodern\/8657495895\/in\/set-72157633231044358\" target=\"_blank\">Frederick Law Olmsted<\/a> (honorary degree, 1864), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/houghtonmodern\/8658634724\/in\/set-72157633231044358\" target=\"_blank\">Theodore Roosevel<\/a>t (1880) and his cousin Franklin (1904):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/FDR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2272\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/FDR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/FDR.jpg 269w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/FDR-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While many of the bookplates are more traditional, displaying a collector&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/houghtonmodern\/8657306331\/in\/set-72157633231044358\" target=\"_blank\">heraldry<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/houghtonmodern\/8657303873\/in\/set-72157633231044358\" target=\"_blank\">family motto<\/a>, many are small works of art in their own right, such as the plate of Frank Roy Fraprie (BS 1898) and of John B.
