In <em>Les apr\u00e8s-midi de Montmartre, <\/em>published in 1919, author Ren\u00e9 Baudu documents the drinking, drug use, and prostitution that attended Montmartre&#8217;s heyday as the center of artistic life in Paris. <em>Les apr\u00e8s-midi de Montmartre<\/em> describes, in fiction, the \u201clost girls\u201d that inhabited the neighborhood, and the vagaries to which they were subject:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Montmartre girls need love, champagne, shots and a little mystery. What they mistake for love is a childish sentimentality found in music-hall songs and mass-market novels. (p. [17])<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Montmartre-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2223\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/05\/Montmartre-1-717x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The text is accompanied by fourteen engravings by \u00c9douard Chimot, depicting the young women of Montmartre. This copy is unusual in that the publisher, L\u2019\u00c9dition, has been replaced on the wrappers and title page with \u201cPour le compte des auteurs\u201d\u00a0 (\u201con behalf of the authors\u201d); it also features an envelope bound in at the end with additional copies of the engravings in various colors and states, as well as two original pencil sketches.
