{"id":2071,"date":"2013-07-09T09:47:14","date_gmt":"2013-07-09T13:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=2071"},"modified":"2013-10-22T10:58:02","modified_gmt":"2013-10-22T14:58:02","slug":"cactus-cultivation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2013\/07\/09\/cactus-cultivation\/","title":{"rendered":"Cactus cultivation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired Santo Domingo collection.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2072\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000004-648x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 Interested in learning more about cacti and where they grow?\u00a0 This French publication of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hollis.harvard.edu\/?itemid=|library\/m\/aleph|013685687\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Les cact\u00e9es cultiv\u00e9es<\/em><\/a> could be for you.\u00a0 The volume was published by the Librairie Agricole de la Maison Rustique in 1931 by Andr\u00e9 Guillaumin, who was a French botanist.\u00a0 Guillaumin became the chair of botany and plant physiology at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, and then eventually the deputy director from 1947-1950.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2074 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000006-300x275.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000006-300x275.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000006-1024x941.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Echinopsis multiplex zuccarini<\/em> is apparently found in Southern Brazil, while <em>Echinopsis pentlandii<\/em>, which flowers, is more commonly located in Bolivia.\u00a0 Inside the pages of this volume there were two small color illustrations mounted on paper.\u00a0 <em>Cierge en tuyaux d&#8217;orgue<\/em> is commonly known as the organ pipe cactus due to its shape.<em>\u00a0 <\/em>The series and number information printed on the front of both imply that these were part of a set of illustrations about cacti.\u00a0 The size suggests the possibility of them being stamps, but we don&#8217;t really know.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t appear that these color illustrations were connected to the volume, most likely they were simply stuck between the pages by a previous owner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2073\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000005-449x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000005-449x1024.jpg 449w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2013\/04\/cacti_000005-131x300.jpg 131w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Les cact\u00e9es cultiv\u00e9es \/ par A.
