Burr Collection.<\/p>\n<p>These boxes once housed films sold to the home market, and they fall into a few categories.<\/p>\n<p>First, the newsfilm, newsreel, sports, or other newsy documentary\u00a0 film.\u00a0 These are generally serial or magazine -type films.\u00a0 The covers don&#8217;t have much variation from month to month.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-164\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-037-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"news magazine\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-165\" 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next up, the cartoon.\u00a0 Most of these cartoons are not one-offs, so the same cover could be used for all Happy Hooligan cartoons, for instance, with only the name (printed on the side) changing for each box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-168\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-051-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Happy Hooligan\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-051-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-051-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Soundies are another example of a somewhat generic cover that could be used again and again, the only variation being the color of the box and the description of the content.\u00a0 Soundies were short musical films, a pre-cursor to the music video.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-169\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-036-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Soundies\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-036-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-036-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several distributors, finding their content appealing and their name well recognized, chose to sell their films in a generic box almost all the time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-172\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-048-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dover films\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-048-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-048-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-173\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/hfacollections\/files\/2009\/09\/blog-053-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Blackhawk\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, a generic box was also a cost cutter, as was re-using an image.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" films had exciting covers showing scenes from the film.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-181\"
