[Professor Sun Dongdong from the Law School of Beijing University (or Peking University) told the media that “99% of the petitioners–if not 100%–have mental illness.” Commentators say the statement will justify\u00a0some governments’ illegal usage of\u00a0asylum to suppress petitions from Chinese citizens.<\/p>\n

Illgal usage of asylum to supress petitions is rampant in China.\u00a0According to a news report<\/a>\u00a0from SINA.com, at least 18 people are believed to have been sent to such hospitals in Xintai city in Shandong province, with some being given debilitating drugs. Another news report <\/a>shows that Xintai city government openly\u00a0instruct\u00a0its agencies (of course this is only “to share with other agencies the experience” )\u00a0to use asylum as one of the three major ways to\u00a0deal with petitioners.\u00a0And obviously it has been followed by agencies from Xintai City.<\/p>\n

Public intellectual Yan Lieshan <\/a>analyzed\u00a0Professor Sun’s\u00a0statement, and found there was only consistant logic in his reasoning, which was simply “the government is always right, and there’s no need to change the status quo(\u5f3a\u52bf\u4e00\u65b9\u603b\u662f\u6709\u7406\u7684\uff0c\u73b0\u884c\u5236\u5ea6\u6ca1\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u8981\u4fee\u6b63\u7684).”<\/p>\n
