I come with an agenda of helping children,<br \/>\nparticularly in the areas of education and health and to address the<br \/>\nissues of hunger and malnutrition. &#x2026; I don&#8217;t believe that these issues<br \/>\nare relevant to the missions of UNICEF.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">This is in sharp contrast to her predecessor, Carol Bellamy. T<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">he prestigious British medical journal, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\">The Lancet<\/a>, culminated its long-standing criticism of her in a December editorial: <\/span>&#8220;Her<br \/>\ndistinctive focus has been to advocate for the rights of children. This<br \/>\nrights-based approach to the future of children fits well with the<br \/>\nzeitgeist of international development policy. But a preoccupation with<br \/>\nrights ignores the fact that children will have no opportunity for<br \/>\ndevelopment at all unless they survive&#8230; Child survival must sit at<br \/>\nthe core of UNICEF&#x2019;s advocacy and country work.
