Each of these courses of study is actually made up of equal parts of two combined fields of concentration, ‘70% from one field and 70% from another’. In terms of semester hours, the workload can be expressed with fairness, but not in terms of thirty credits per semester. ‘There must be exceptions in cases where the exceptions can be justified. After all, in both of these fields we’re dealing with very achievement-oriented students.’ Woerner is supported by his deputy in the organization he represents, the Vice-President of the Technical University of Munich, Ernst Rank. ‘To make such exceptions would go against the typical German process of leveling down higher achievement,’ says Rank, who heads an elite master’s degree program in computational engineering in Munich. In this program students have to carry thirty extra credits.
