Just the opposite: a visit to this lively area, to the east of central Berlin, has been an integral part of every visitor’s program. But now this: a badly injured Italian, right where Berlin – ever eager for culture, tolerant, and open to the world – amuses itself day and night. Three heavies with shaved heads cursed this Italian male as a ‘shit foreigner’ and beat him with an iron rod or a baseball bat, as reported to the police by thirty-year-old Gianni C. Some aspects of the case seem baffling – first, there are no witnesses to a crime that occurred in an area that is lively even at night; and second, the seriously injured victim obviously hobbled around for hours without ever being noticed by anyone. The police are now investigating, but there is considerable uproar. Italian newspapers are already ringing the ‘racism alarm’ (La Stampa).”

(To be continued)

Author and Source: Christoph Seils, “Nachts die Vorstaedte meiden“, Die Zeit, 18.05.2006, Nr.21.

“I feel like someone who has been attacked and injured by a group of thugs.
