Naturally most Berliners take that as a matter of course. Beyond Germany’s borders, though, people see the situation here a little differently. Three weeks before the start of the soccer World Cup, Germany’s capital has realized – with mixed feelings of outrage and horror – how much the violent right-wing scene has damaged its reputation. ‘If you’re gay or if you don’t look German, avoid Berlin’s eastern suburbs,’ writes the author of a well-known British guidebook. Readers of an American guide are told, ‘At night, it is advisable to be careful in the suburbs, especially in the eastern suburbs of Lichtenberg and Marzahn. Even the U.S. State Department finds it necessary to issue words of warning about violent right-wingers in the eastern part of Germany.”

(To be continued)

Author and Source: Christoph Seils, “Nachts die Vorstaedte meiden“, Die Zeit, 18.05.2006, Nr.21.

“I feel like someone who has been attacked and injured by a group of thugs.
