As in the case of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, money becomes available only when it is too late. Of course the German federal government is ready to help, to a certain extent. Since 2007, 700 million euros (US$ 968,000,000) of federal funding has been invested in maintaining and constructing of university buildings every year. The federal Ministry of Education states that this money will continue to be available on 2019. The state education ministers’ conference has said, however, that these funds are insufficient. The ministers have for several years been requesting an increase to 900 million euros (US$ 1,244,000,000) annually, but the federal government has refused. A spokesperson for the federal Ministry of Education states that such an increase is “constitutionally ruled out.”

(To be continued)

Source: Gustav Bayer, “Hilfe, die Uni stürzt ein!“, Die Zeit Online, 15 Oktober 2013.

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2012-2013, (http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2013-14/world-ranking) the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 87 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia.
