The Universities (in Germany) Are Falling Apart!\u201d \u2013 8<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ruhr University Bochum is another example. During the preparations for the annual summer festival last year, a fork lift broke through the paving slabs on the university\u2019s central plaza and then had to be recovered with another machine. The slabs were dilapidated and had been carelessly laid down in the first place. It is now only thirty-seven places behind China\u2019s Tsinghua University (ranked 50 in the world), only thirty places behind the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (ranked 57 in the world), only forty-two places behind Peking University (ranked 45 in the world), only sixty-one places behind the National University of Singapore (ranked 26 in the world), only twenty-seven places behind Korea\u2019s Pohang University of Science and Technology (ranked 60 in the world), and, for another comparison, only eighty-two places behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked 5 in the world).
