A general requirement in this regard is usual expressed in university regulations governing doctorates. However, the thousands of dissertations that are pushed through university committees every year do not signify any academic progress worth mentioning. This is not only true of the scandalous plagiarism of people like zu Guttenberg and other “cheat” PhDs. It is true also of the countless collections of absurd dissertations on topics like “Lacerations to the Penis through Masturbation with a Vacuum Cleaner” or “A Discussion of the Legal Status of the Bullet in the Body of a Wounded Person.” Dissertations like that can with good reason be laughed at.
