When a non-academic lay person reads these dissertations, that person has the impression that these texts were all mass-produced on a kind of drawing board. The structure of all these theses is practically identical, and with many of them, the introductory material is strikingly similar. Moreover, at least nine of the texts contain a chapter called “Preliminary Editorial Remarks,” in which some of the sentences on methodology are the same, word for word. In addition, there are acknowledgement sections in which four paragraphs even correspond to one another almost completely. For example, two doctoral candidate dentists offered dissertations with the following: “I would like to thank Professor Keil, first of all, who introduced me to an understanding of medieval script and who accompanied me at every stage in the development of this dissertation.” If the doctoral candidate is asked about this, the somewhat perverse response is, “Oh, these acknowledgement pages always contain the same thing.” A reader is almost left with the suspicion that it is Professor Keil who is actually thanking himself.

(To be continued)

Source: Mueller, Daniel, „Promotionen: Würzburger Doktorfabrik“, Die Zeit Online, 16 November 2012.
*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2012-2013, (http://goo.gl/6EqmQ) the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 105 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia.
