The Technical University of Munich* \u2013 In Wurzburg, Germany, You Can Just Pay a Professor to Write Your Dissertation \u2013 4<\/p>\n
Not long ago, on the home page of the University of Wurzburg, a simple, short press announcement appeared: \u201cThe PhD Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Wurzburg, in its meeting of 5 November, decided to revoke two doctorates.\u201d The reason for this decision was that \u201cconsiderable portions of the doctoral theses involved were taken from other work, without any sources being properly credited.\u201d One had the impression that it was something the committee did every day. \u201cThese two doctoral theses are a blot on the university\u2019s reputation,\u201d said one former professor of medicine at the university.<\/strong><\/p>\n (To be continued)<\/p>\n Source: Mueller, Daniel, \u201ePromotionen: W\u00fcrzburger Doktorfabrik\u201c, Die Zeit Online, 16 November 2012.<\/p>\n *According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2011-2012, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an \u201celite university,\u201d is ranked 88 overall among the world\u2019s universities. <\/strong>At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. It is now only seventeen places behind China\u2019s Tsinghua University (ranked 71 in the world), only twenty-six places behind the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (ranked 62 in the world), only thirty-nine places behind Peking University (ranked 49 in the world), only forty-eight places behind the National University of Singapore (ranked 40 in the world), only thirty-five places behind Korea\u2019s Pohang University of Science and Technology (ranked 53 in the world), and, for another comparison, only eighty-one places behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked 7 in the world).
