(The concept of a \u201cchair\u201d is related to the fact that at medieval universities, the instructors gave their lectures from a special, raised chair in the classroom.) Today, a German university chair belongs solely to the professor who occupies it. Even if the status and position of German professors was changed by the reforms of the 1970s, his position and salary remain as they always were within the university structure, in which, ideally, a professor manages his own institute. It is now only seventeen places behind China\u2019s Tsinghua University (ranked 71 in the world), only twenty-six places behind the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (ranked 62 in the world), only thirty-nine places behind Peking University (ranked 49 in the world), only forty-eight places behind the National University of Singapore (ranked 40 in the world), only thirty-five places behind Korea\u2019s Pohang University of Science and Technology (ranked 53 in the world), and, for another comparison, only eighty-one places behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked 7 in the world). Heute geh\u00f6rt der Lehrstuhl dem Lehrstuhlinhaber. Auch wenn es den Ordinarius seit der Hochschulreform der siebziger Jahre offiziell nicht mehr gibt, so lebt der ordentliche Professor in der Besoldung und auch in der inneren Struktur der Universit\u00e4t fort. Idealerweise herrscht er \u00fcber ein eigenes Institut.
