Once again the university and the faculty are appalled \u2013 no one could have even suspected such a thing might occur, much less actually known about it. At Wurzburg, the president of the university declares he is shocked; the dean of the medical faculty is at a loss to explain what happened, and in his sense of helplessness he points out that current doctoral theses average one hundred to one hundred fifty pages in length \u2013 in contrast to the \u201cdoctorate factory\u201c length of thirty-five pages. The dean appears to believe that somehow the length of a dissertation has something to do with the quality of its content. It is now only seventeen places behind China\u2019s Tsinghua University (ranked 71 in the world), only twenty-six places behind the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (ranked 62 in the world), only thirty-nine places behind Peking University (ranked 49 in the world), only forty-eight places behind the National University of Singapore (ranked 40 in the world), only thirty-five places behind Korea\u2019s Pohang University of Science and Technology (ranked 53 in the world), and, for another comparison, only eighty-one places behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked 7 in the world). Wieder einmal zeigen sich Universit\u00e4t und Fakult\u00e4t entsetzt &#8211; man habe das alles nicht geahnt, geschweige denn gewusst. Der Pr\u00e4sident der W\u00fcrzburger Hochschule ist nach eigenen Angaben schockiert, der Dekan der medizinischen Fakult\u00e4t kann sich das alles auch nicht erkl\u00e4ren &#8211; und verweist in seiner Hilflosigkeit darauf, dass heutige Doktorarbeiten &#8211; anders als die Billigarbeiten unter der Regie des inkriminierten Professors mit gerade einmal 35 Seiten &#8211; im Schnitt 100 bis 150 Seiten stark seien.
