But how can German academics carry on serious research if they are expected to act as advisers to increasing numbers of students, while spending the rest of their time making up for budget shortfalls by writing grant applications? And how can any German university attract the best international researchers if it can no longer offer them the finest working conditions? It is now only seventeen places behind China\u2019s Tsinghua University (ranked 71 in the world), only twenty-six places behind the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (ranked 62 in the world), only thirty-nine places behind Peking University (ranked 49 in the world), only forty-eight places behind the National University of Singapore (ranked 40 in the world), only thirty-five places behind Korea\u2019s Pohang University of Science and Technology (ranked 53 in the world), and, for another comparison, only eighty-one places behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked 7 in the world). Wie aber wollen Wissenschaftler ernsthaft forschen, wenn sie immer mehr Studierende betreuen und die verbleibende Arbeitszeit aufgrund r\u00fcckl\u00e4ufiger Budgets f\u00fcr das Schreiben von Drittmittelantr\u00e4gen aufwenden m\u00fcssen? Wie kann eine Universit\u00e4t noch Spitzenforscher aus dem Ausland gewinnen, wenn diesen keine attraktiven Arbeitsbedingungen mehr geboten werden k\u00f6nnen?
