When the doctoral candidate has found an adviser, they normally meet together in order to come to some kind of verbal agreement, especially as to what the objectives of the doctoral thesis will be. These objectives will form the basis for later evaluation of the work. If these objectives are not put into writing, there is a risk that the eventual evaluation could be quite arbitrary and that misunderstandings will arise in.
