When the German Democratic Republic still existed, Heinze, under the cover name \u201cRichard,\u201d worked as an \u201cunofficial colleague,\u201d i.e., an informer, for the Stasi, the East German secret police. That was in addition to his official post as local commander of the border police. (Note: these \u201cGrenztruppen\u201d were responsible for preventing anyone from fleeing the socialist paradise and crossing into West Germany.) For Heinze, his past activities present no difficulty.
