According to a recent student union survey, around 190,000 so-called “education foreigners,” i.e., international students, are now attending German universities. That is almost one tenth of the country’s total student population. Eighty-five percent of these “education foreigners” are what is known as “free movers,” because they manage their studies without being part of any formal exchange program. “Study abroad is expensive,” says Karl-Heinz Korn of the foreign students’ office at the University of Cologne. “And I have great respect for those students who also overcome all these hurdles.
