\u201cStefan Rick of the shop \u2018YOUR Ideal Home Range\u2019 tells us what happened: \u2018We took over the shop from \u2018Island Ceramics\u2019 in the autumn of 2002. We kept the same shop sign. We didn\u2019t change the size. We left the shape as it was. The sign is hanging in exactly the same place as before. All we did was have our own lettering and our company name plate put on the sign.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cAll that sounds like a matter of course for any firm. It was done quite quickly, and it was a simple thing. Or at least it would have been simple without the local government Department of Buildings and its regulations. Stefan Rick continues: \u2018Instead of completing a very small project, it now turned out that we needed to make a complete application for a building permit. That included various maps of the area, vehicle access routes, and the whole range of details required for a permit to construct an entire building\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRegulation madness has been rampant in Germany for a very long time. Everything \u2013 and we mean everything \u2013 seems to be regulated in this country. We recently asked our viewers to send in the most pointless regulations that they\u2019d encountered, and we received some terrific examples of absurd bureaucratic complexity. We\u2019re presenting three of these tonight:<\/p>\n
\u201cQuite literally everything in Germany is under the control of German law. One example of this fact can be found on the North Sea island of Sylt, in Westerland, a small, picturesque town with lots of little shops. These shops of course all have signs at the front. The authorities have judged one of these signs to be illegal, verboten.\u201d<\/p>\n

In der Sommerpause von Frontal21 suchten wir die \u00fcberfl\u00fcssigste Verordnung Deutschlands. Ihre Einsendungen waren sch\u00f6ne und absurde Beispiele beh\u00f6rdlicher Kompliziertheit. Drei davon stellen wir in einem Beitrag vor.<\/p>\n

No question about that. But I think that if people do give up, then the Nazis have won. \u201cThe NPD likes to present itself officially as a party of peace, so the authorities usually give its members permission to hold their demonstrations, like this one here in Berlin on 1 May. And by the way, present at this demonstration was the man from Lower Saxony who allegedly beat eighteen-year-old Jan so brutally.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe showed the head of the NPD photos of Jan and the serious injuries he sustained, injuries inflicted by an NPD supporter. Herr Voigt, the NPD chief, responded by saying the NPD rejects violence.\u201c<\/p>\n

The police confiscated axe handles and baseball bats, and that\u2019s raised this kind of incident to a whole new level. We\u2019re very concerned about that. \u201cThe police found these weapons with the NPD supporters: blackjacks, baseball bats, metal pipes, axe handles, irritant gas. All of these things \u2013 when used as weapons \u2013 are forbidden by law. In seven cases, criminal proceedings were initiated. NPD supporters are getting younger and younger, and they\u2019re less and less reluctant to resort to violence. This has been confirmed by the police authorities in Lower Saxony that deal with subversive elements.\u201c<\/p>\n
