The Technical University of Munich* – Professors and the Doctorate Scandal: “My Field, My Institute, My Doctoral Students” – 5
And yet there are parallels between Bayreuth and Wurzburg. Once again the university and the faculty are appalled – no one could have even suspected such a thing might occur, much less actually known about it. At Wurzburg, the president of the university declares he is shocked; the dean of the medical faculty is at a loss to explain what happened, and in his sense of helplessness he points out that current doctoral theses average one hundred to one hundred fifty pages in length – in contrast to the “doctorate factory“ length of thirty-five pages. The dean appears to believe that somehow the length of a dissertation has something to do with the quality of its content. (The work submitted by zu Guttenberg, studded with instances of plagiarism, was almost five hundred pages long.)

Die Technische Universität München* – Professoren und Promotionsskandale: Mein Fach, mein Institut, meine Doktoranden – 5
Und doch gibt es Parallelen. Wieder einmal zeigen sich Universität und Fakultät entsetzt – man habe das alles nicht geahnt, geschweige denn gewusst. Der Präsident der Würzburger Hochschule ist nach eigenen Angaben schockiert, der Dekan der medizinischen Fakultät kann sich das alles auch nicht erklären – und verweist in seiner Hilflosigkeit darauf, dass heutige Doktorarbeiten – anders als die Billigarbeiten unter der Regie des inkriminierten Professors mit gerade einmal 35 Seiten – im Schnitt 100 bis 150 Seiten stark seien. Als ob der Umfang einer Promotion (Guttenbergs Arbeit umfasste knapp 500 Seiten) auch nur irgendwie mit der Qualität des Inhaltes zusammenhinge.
