The Technical University of Munich* ¨ – Professors and the Doctorate Scandal: “My Field, My Institute, My Doctoral Students” ¨ – 7
The universities of Bayreuth and Wurzburg, the Guttenberg case, and the two members of the European Parliament now under suspicion of plagiarism, Silvana Koch-Mehrin and Jorgo Chatzimarkakis ? – all of that raises the question, “Is Germany a land of cheap doctorates?” Or is it a matter of the “dreck effect” – i.e., when you notice one thing that’s wrong, suddenly you start noticing that same thing everywhere? At any rate, one can only speculate about the number of copied, partly plagiarized, completely falsified, or content-poor doctoral theses in Germany.

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2011-2012, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 88 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. Die Technische Universität München* ¨ – Professoren und Promotionsskandale: Mein Fach, mein Institut, meine Doktoranden ¨ – 7
Bayreuth und Würzburg, der Fall Guttenberg und die im Verdacht stehenden FDP-Europaabgeordneten Silvana Koch-Mehrin und Jorgo Chatzimarkakis – ist Deutschland ein Land der Billig-Promotionen? Oder handelt es sich jetzt nur um den unvermeidlichen Dreckeffekt – wenn man einmal genauer hinschaut, fallen Missstände plötzlich auf? Über die Zahl abgeschriebener, teilweise plagiierter, vollends gefälschter oder inhaltlich dürftiger Arbeiten kann man nur spekulieren.
