The Technical University of Munich* – Profiles in Something Other than Courage – 15
In many academic disciplines in the former East Germany, the only thing that instructors and professors lacked was knowledge of the literature produced in their field in the West, especially in the English-speaking West. In the former German Democratic Republic, access to western publications, or permission to travel to the West, was granted to only a chosen circle of politically dependable academics.

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2010, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 101 overall among the world’s universities. Die Technische Universität München* – „Die Universität trug leider nichts zur Wende bei” – 15
In vielen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen fehlte den DDR-Wissenschaftlern eigentlich nur die Kenntnis der westlichen, vor allem der englischsprachigen Literatur. Denn der Zugang zur westlichen Literatur war genauso wie die Erlaubnis zu Westreisen nur einem ausgewählten Kreis politisch zuverlässiger Wissenschaftler ermöglicht worden.
