But from the age of fifty onwards, hardly any one of them has a serious chance. They simply go on working without pay, doing teaching and research – and living from their spouse’s income, from an inheritance, from a second job, from the income from a company they’ve founded, or from third-party funding that they’ve brought into the university.

Doch schon ab 50 hat kaum einer der Habilitierten mehr eine ernsthafte Chance. So arbeiten sie weiter ohne Bezahlung in Lehre und Forschung an ihrer akademischen Karriere – und leben vom Gehalt ihrer Ehefrau, vom elterlichen Erbe, von einem Zweitberuf, einer eigenen Firma oder von Drittmitteln, die sie selbst eingeworben haben.
