People may assert that “outside lecturers” at German universities cannot, strictly speaking, really be called “slaves.” They are, after all, free. They could simply renounce their academic title and their career whenever they wanted to. And anyway the question arises as to why any educated young people would inflict such a situation on themselves. Why would they remain “outside lecturers” for a considerable time and then, after two to four years of teaching, unpaid, go through still another complicated qualification process in order to become “supernumerary professors,” thus occupying a professional position that is also unpaid?

Vielleicht denken Sie: Privatdozenten sind doch gar keine »richtigen« Sklaven. Schließlich sind sie ja frei: Sie könnten auch auf ihre Titel und ihren Beruf verzichten. Und überhaupt stellt sich doch die Frage: Warum tut sich das jemand an und bleibt auf längere Zeit Privatdozent – nur um dann nach zwei bis vier Jahren der unbezahlten Lehre in einem wiederum aufwendigen Begutachtungsverfahren zum immer noch ohne Bezahlung lehrenden außerplanmäßigen Professor zu werden?
