The Technical University of Munich* – German Universities Strapped for Cash? Get It from the Foreigners – 23
If there seems to be a paradox in the fact that international students prefer an expensive education in Australia to a less costly one in Germany, it may not really be a paradox at all. In Australia, because of the availability of good advisers and counselors, foreign students achieve their goals more quickly and, under certain circumstances, less expensively than in Germany. Thus, Pinkwart and Zoellner believe that a system in which foreign students pay tuition must be combined with improved service and better conditions at German universities.

*In the area of engineering/technology and computer sciences, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked with twenty-two other universities at 78 or below, well beneath such institutions as the Technical University of Denmark. (http://www.arwu.org/ARWUFIELD2009ENG.jsp) According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2009, the Technical University of Munich is ranked 55 overall among the world’s universities. That is, for example, seven places below Seoul National University.

So ist das vermeintliche Paradoxon, dass internationale Studenten das teure Australien der vermeintlich günstigen Bundesrepublik vorziehen, am Ende vielleicht gar keines: In Australien kommen die Ausländer dank der guten Betreuung schneller und damit unter Umständen sogar günstiger weg als hierzulande. Entsprechend versehen auch Pinkwart und Zöllner ihre Gebührenüberlegung mit dem Vorbehalt, dass die Unis ihren Service auch wirklich verbessern.
