The Technical University of Munich* – German Universities Strapped for Cash? Get It from the Foreigners – 19
In a few months, the results of a survey by the Marketing Consortium GATE-Germany will be published. (This consortium was founded by German universities and by the DAAD [the German Academic Exchange Service].) The survey will for the first time cover the question of what motivates foreign students to study in certain countries. It will also attempt to show whether or not the language barrier prevents some students from enrolling in German universities. (Student concerns about problems with the German language would be a surprise, since nearly every subject can be studied and nearly any degree can be obtained in English in Germany.)

*In the area of engineering/technology and computer sciences, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked with twenty-two other universities at 78 or below, well beneath such institutions as the Technical University of Denmark. (http://www.arwu.org/ARWUFIELD2009ENG.jsp) According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2009, the Technical University of Munich is ranked 55 overall among the world’s universities. That is, for example, seven places below Seoul National University.

Die Technische Universität München* – Alle mal herkommen! – 19
In wenigen Monaten wird das von DAAD und Hochschulen gegründete Marketingkonsortium GATE-Germany erstmals eine Umfrage veröffentlichen, die Aufschluss über ihre Beweggründe geben soll – auch darüber, ob der eigentliche Motivationskiller für ein Deutschland-Studium nicht doch die Sprache ist. Was freilich eine Überraschung wäre: Mittlerweile kann fast jedes Fach und auf fast jeden Abschluss hin auf Englisch studiert werden.
