The Technical University of Munich* – German Universities Strapped for Cash? Get It from the Foreigners – 11
Reactions were not slow in coming: “We have a different tradition in Germany,” said Uwe Brandenburg of the Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (Center for University Development or CHE, a partner organization of Zeit Online). Brandenburg said he thought this tradition was a good thing, and that “Education and culture cannot simply be treated as something to be bought and sold. That’s not the way we think of these things. You can’t reduce education and culture almost to the level of a set of training courses!”

*In the area of engineering/technology and computer sciences, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked with twenty-two other universities at 78 or below, well beneath such institutions as the Technical University of Denmark. (http://www.arwu.org/ARWUFIELD2009ENG.jsp) According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2009, the Technical University of Munich is ranked 55 overall among the world’s universities. That is, for example, seven places below Seoul National University.

Entsprechend fallen die Reaktionen aus. »Wir haben in Deutschland eine andere Tradition«, sagt Uwe Brandenburg von Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE) (Anmerkung der Re-daktion: CHE ist Kooperationspartner von ZEIT ONLINE) – und das sei auch gut so: »Bildung ausschließlich als Ware zu behandeln, die man einfach so verkauft, entspricht nicht unserem Verständnis. Wir sollten ein wenig Bildung in der Ausbildung behalten«!
