The Technical University of Munich* – A Bad Mistake – 6
The current behavior of politicians in education has been observed before, for example during the recent spelling reform of the German language. That reform also had its start as a bureaucratic fantasy, and it too aroused strong opposition. In the end, when it was more than clear that the reform was a mistake, its supporters began to slowly back off, in several stages, all of which led ultimately to a sweeping reversal of the reform. Today, in most publications in German, everything – except for the double “s” in certain words – is spelled the way it was fifteen years ago, before the “reform.”

Die Technische Universität München* – Ein Irrtum wie die Rechtschreibreform – 6
Für das Verhalten der Bildungspolitiker gibt es ein Muster: die Rechtschreibreform. Auch sie ging auf eine bürokratische Phantasie zurück, auch sie löste heftigen Widerstand aus, und als endlich überdeutlich wurde, dass sie ein Irrtum war, begann ein zähes Zurückweichen, das, in mehreren Etappen, zur weitgehenden Auflösung der Reform führte. In den meisten Veröffent-lichungen deutscher Sprache wird heute, abgesehen vom “ss”, wieder so geschrieben, wie das vor fünfzehn Jahren der Fall war.
