The Technical University of Munich* – Professors under Suspicion – 12
Every year in Germany 25,000 people receive PhD degrees. It is estimated that between one and two percent of these individuals obtain their degrees through dubious means. In other words, every year between 250 and 500 fake doctorates are produced in Germany. For those who grant these “degrees” the reward is obvious: for them, on average, every fake doctorate is worth around 13,000 euros (19,000 US dollars) in additional income every year.

Jedes Jahr werden in Deutschland etwa 25.000 Akademiker zum Doktor ernannt. Schätzungsweise ein bis zwei Prozent gelangen auf dubiosen Wegen zum Titel. Das bedeutet, dass jährlich zwischen 250 und 500 falsche Doktorhüte produziert werden. Der Vorteil für den Geber liegt auf der Hand: Etwa 13.000 Euro zusätzliches Jahresgehalt bringt ein Titel im Schnitt.
