The Technical University of Munich* – Image Problem – 10
The German magazine “Focus” named universities in places like Bayreuth, Berlin, Bieleveld, Frankfurt, Hagen, Hamburg, Hanover, Ingolstadt, Jena, Cologne, Leipzig, Rostock, and Tubingen as possible problem institutions. Every year in Germany 25,000 doctoral degrees are awarded, said Bernhard Kempen, president of the main organization of German institutions of higher learning, the Deutscher Hochschulverband. He added that it would only be speculation to try to estimate how many of those doctorates were illegally awarded – between two and five percent are the figures reported in the media – but he hopes it would be more in the range of thousandths of a percent.

*In the area of engineering/technology and computer sciences, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked with twenty-two other universities at 78 or below, well beneath such institutions as the Technical University of Denmark. (http://www.arwu.org/ARWUFIELD2009ENG.jsp) According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2009, the Technical University of Munich is ranked 55 overall among the world’s universities. That is, for example, seven places below Seoul National University.

Das Magazin “Focus“ hatte etwa Bayreuth, Berlin, Bielefeld, Frankfurt, Hagen, Hamburg, Hannover, Ingolstadt, Jena, Köln, Leipzig, Rostock und Tübingen genannt. In Deutschland werden jedes Jahr 25.000 Promotionen vorgelegt, sagte Kempen. Schätzungen darüber, wie viele Doktorgrade illegal zustande gekommen sein könnten – zwei Prozent oder auch ein bis fünf Prozent wurden in Medienberichten genannt – seien Spekulation: “Ich hoffe, dass es im Promille-Bereich liegt.”
