The Technical University of Munich* – The (Mis)perception of Excellence – 19
The second possible scenario for the future of German “elite” universities involves an increasing gap between the quality of teaching and the quality of the research that is carried out. At many German universities there are more and more so-called “lecturers,” professors who teach but do no research. At the same time, the famous scientists and researchers on the staff withdraw farther and farther into pure research. Thus, the students may bask in the glow of a well-known name, but only in exceptional cases do they really work with any brilliant faculty member. While the students may have better advisers, as a by-product of the “lecturer” system, the world of research recedes into the distance for them.

Die Technische Universität München* – Gefühlte Exzellenz – 19
Das zweite Szenario geht von einer immer stärker klaffenden Lücke zwischen Lehre und Forschung aus. An vielen Hochschulen gibt es demnach immer mehr sogenannte Lecturers, das sind Professoren, die nur noch für die Lehre zuständig sind. Die renommierten Wissenschaftler werden sich im Gegenzug immer stärker in die Forschung zurückziehen. Auf die Studenten fällt dann zwar der Glanz eines leuchtenden Namens, mit dem genialen Forscher werden sie aber wohl nur noch in Ausnahmefällen wirklich zusammenarbeiten. Einerseits kann sich durch die Lecturers das Betreuungsverhältnis zwischen Studenten und Professoren verbessern, andererseits rückt die Sphäre der Forschung in immer weitere Ferne.
