Cologne is expanding as well. Axel Freimuth, rector of the university, says, “We have a great need for new construction. Our present campus was designed to accommodate 25,000 students, but we have 44,000.” Freimuth is renting nearly 65,000 square feet of space until current construction is complete, since a new education building and a center for biology and gerontology cannot be built overnight. Other universities are wary of new construction, because they know there could be a decline in the number of new students after the year 2020. Axel Freimuth is not concerned: “The University of Cologne will always have more applicants than it can accept,” he says. Starting in 2013, education reforms in Germany should create an enormous increase in the number of university students in the state in which Cologne is located. Only then will Freimuth be able to judge if his plans have met the challenges his university faces.

Auch Köln baut: „Wir haben einen riesigen Baubedarf. Die Gebäude sind für 25.000 Studenten ausgelegt, wir haben aber 44.000“, sagt Rektor Freimuth. 6000 Quadratmeter hat er angemietet, um die Bauphase zu überbrücken, denn ein neues Lehrgebäude, ein Bio- und ein Altersforschungszentrum baut man nicht von heute auf morgen. Andere Hochschulen scheuen Neubauten, weil sie wissen, dass ab 2020 die Zahl der Studienanfänger wieder sinken könnte. Diese Sorgen macht sich Axel Freimuth nicht: „Die Uni Köln wird immer überproportional nachgefragt werden“, sagt er. Ob seine Vorbereitungen reichen, um dem “Studentenberg” zu begegnen, kann er jetzt noch nicht abschätzen, sondern vielleicht erst 2013, wenn der doppelte Abiturjahrgang in NRW an die Hochschulen strömt.
