Right-wing extremism in Germany has been repeatedly dismissed as a problem only in the eastern part of the country. The results of the Leipzig study refute that idea. The authors’ conclusion: “People in eastern Germany tend to favour a right-wing authoritarian dictatorship, and they exhibit excessive patriotism and xenophobia. On the other hand, people in western Germany are more anti-Semitic and more likely to believe in social Darwinism. They also tend to downplay what happened under the Nazis.” One of the authors of the study, Oliver Decker, says, “In postwar Germany, the belief in limitless prosperity became a substitute for disproved Nazi racial theories and the loss of the ideology of the master race.”

Immer wieder wird Rechtsextremismus als exklusives Problem des Ostens abgetan. Die Ergebnisse der Studie widerlegen das. “Ostdeutsche neigen eher einer rechtsautoritären Diktatur zu, sind chauvinistischer und ausländerfeindlicher. Dagegen sind Westdeutsche antisemitischer, sozialdarwinistischer und neigen eher zur Verharmlosung des Nationalsozialismus”, analysieren die Autoren. “Wohlstand wurde nach dem Krieg in Deutschland ein Ersatz für die verlorene Rassen- und Herrenideologie”, sagt Oliver Decker.
