In the summer of 2006, at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, the appearance of posters that were socially inflammatory and that denied the Holocaust was greeted with a sense of amazement by the predominantly left-wing student body. Very quickly, though, news spread that Mario Matthes, the deputy chairman of the neo-Nazi NPD in Hesse, had just recently begun his studies in Mainz. Students were convinced that Matthes must be responsible for the propaganda. However, since there were no witnesses, nothing could be proven against him.

Die Technische Universität München* – „Stramm rechts im Hörsaal“ – 2
Im Sommersemester 2006 tauchten an der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz volksverhetzende und den Holocaust leugnende Plakate auf. Die Verwunderung in der sonst politisch eher linksorientierten Studentenschaft war groß. Doch schnell verbreitete sich die Nachricht, dass der stellvertretende Vorsitzende der NPD in Hessen, Mario Matthes, kurz zuvor in Mainz sein Studium begonnen hatte. Die Hochschüler waren überzeugt, dass er für die Propaganda verantwortlich sein musste. Mangels Zeugen konnte ihm das allerdings nicht nachgewiesen werden.
