A More Just Educational System in Germany – and at the Technical University of Munich? – 5
“ZEIT: Many of those demanding more justice in the German system of education believe they’ve found a solution in the comprehensive school.* You, on the other hand, are a supporter of a two-tier school system. You believe the ‘Gymnasium’** should continue to exist, and the other levels of German schooling should all be combined into one. Why don’t you want to touch the privileges of the ‘Gymnasium’?
”Lenzen: The ‘Gymnasium’ is – despite its drawbacks – the most successful type of school.
“ZEIT: And the one most parents want their children to attend.
Lenzen: It’s also the one in which students do their best work. To get rid of it would be a hazardous move, especially at a time when we want to increase the number of university graduates.
*(NOTE: In countries like the U.K. and Germany, a comprehensive school is one similar to a traditional public high school in the U.S. It includes students of all intellectual levels, abilities, aptitudes – from those planning to go to university to those who will work in a trade, in a craft, or in a factory.)
**(NOTE: A ‘Gymnasium’ – all nouns are capitalized in German – is a selective public secondary school for students planning to attend college after graduation.)

Mehr Gerechtigkeit im Bildungswesen – und an der Technische Universität München? – 5
„ZEIT: Viele, die mehr Bildungsgerechtigkeit fordern, suchen das Heil in der Gesamtschule. Sie hingegen plädieren für ein zweigliedriges Schulsystem. Das Gymnasium soll erhalten bleiben, die übrigen Schulformen sollen in der sogenannten Sekundarschule aufgehen. Warum wollen Sie die Privilegien der Gymnasiasten nicht antasten?
Lenzen: Das Gymnasium ist – trotz aller Mängel – die erfolgreichste Schulform.
ZEIT: Die beliebteste bei den Eltern.
Lenzen: Aber auch in Bezug auf die Leistungen der Schüler. Diese Schulform abzuschaffen, gerade wenn man die Zahl der Akademiker steigern will, wäre abenteuerlich.“
