“Every few years a professor dares to come out into the open and attack his own profession. He accepts the fact that his colleagues will shun him, but he is certain of the public’s attention. The last important attack of this sort happened four years ago, when professors Roland Siegrist and Uwe Gerdes complained about the shady wheeling and dealing that surrounds offers of appointment to German university posts and about the rotten work ethic of German academics who have tenure-like permanent civil service status. ‘People like that can just loaf around for thirty years,’ they warned.”

„Alle paar Jahre wagt sich ein Professor aus der Deckung und attackiert den eigenen Berufsstand. Er nimmt in Kauf, von Kollegen geschnitten zu werden, dafür ist ihm die Aufmerksamkeit der Öffentlichkeit sicher. Der letzte große Angriff liegt vier Jahre zurück, da beklagten sich die Professoren Roland Siegrist und Uwe Gerdes über die Mauschelei bei Berufungsverfahren und die miese Arbeitsmoral beamteter Wissenschaftler. “Die können 30 Jahre faulenzen”, tönten sie.”
