Exploitation at German Universities, but Not, Surely Not, at the Technical University of Munich – 2
”The University of Hamburg, ten o’clock in the morning. Two academics, Dr. Sabine Todt and Thomas Kloss, are on their way to work. The German government has paid around 50,000 euros each (about $66,000) for their education, the normal outlay. Since completing their studies, Todt and Kloss have been doing their own research in Hamburg, at a typical German university, where the best and the brightest are supposed to study and teach – and under the most favorable conditions.
“Annette Schavan, German Federal Minister of Education, 19 May 2006: ‘We have to invest in people and in talent. We have to build bridges between research and the markets of the future. The entire German nation shall be developed into one single forge of talent.’
“That’s certainly quite a responsibility for everyone at a German university. For his share in that responsibility, university graduate Thomas Kloss gets exactly one euro an hour. For her part, Dr. Sabine Todt gets nothing, and has gotten nothing for the last four semesters.
“How can that be?”

„Uni Hamburg, zehn Uhr morgens. Die Wissenschaftler Doktor Sabine Todt und Thomas Kloss sind auf dem Weg zur Arbeit. Für ihre Ausbildung hat der Staat wie für jeden Studenten ungefähr 50.000 Euro bezahlt – inzwischen forschen sie selbst.
