“In the past fifteen years, Berlin has invested around 400 million euros (US$510 million) in subsidies to the fashionable southern part of Prenzlauer Berg. In the meantime, residential areas that were once in good condition have deteriorated, these include the prefabricated East German apartment housing north of the train line, which were once the desirable living standard of the old GDR, together with parts of the so-called ‘Green Town,’ where many of the apartments were last modernized around 1930. People who could afford to moved away from those sections of Berlin long ago.”

„Rund 400 Millionen Euro Subventionen hat Berlin in den vergangenen 15 Jahren in den mondänen Süden des Prenzlauer Bergs investiert. Derweil verkommen ehemals intakte Wohngebiete, etwa die Plattenbauten nördlich des S-Bahn-Ringes, wo der einst begehrte DDR-Standard längst veraltet ist, ebenso wie Teile der »Grünen Stadt«, wo manche Wohnung seit 1930 nicht modernisiert worden ist. Wer es sich leisten kann, ist hier längst weggezogen.“
