I&#8217;ve lost track of Darfur. Jillian<br \/>\nasked us how we could not know about the devastion in New Orleans<br \/>\nbefore Katrina. I did know. Long ago. The news did nothing to remind<br \/>\nme. It worked hard to keep me from remembering. And then one night a<br \/>\nvoice. Oddly, a woman&#8217;s voice &#8211; Laura Flanders . Some people condemn me<br \/>\nas reactionary for listening to her, but they were not the ones to tell<br \/>\nme <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/fensterm\/2005\/08\/29#a124\">what was to come<\/a>. Nor were they the ones to tell me that the Gretna police had turned back a hundred people trying to escape NOLA on foot.<\/p>\n<p>This administration has boldly said, &#8220;We&#8217;re an empire now.&#8221; That is, I<br \/>\nbelieve, a first. [Not being an empire, saying it out loud. We&#8217;re<br \/>\nsupposed to be a democracy or at least a republic remember? Curiously,<br \/>\neven <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_F._Kennan\">George F. Kennan<\/a>, author of the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Containment\">&#8216;containment&#8217;<\/a> policy<br \/>\nargued that there are intrinsic limits to what it is appropriate for our form of government to do in foreign affairs.]<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not enough that You know how bad things are. It matters who else knows. It matters how you tell them.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><br \/>\nYou can&#8217;t beat people up and have them say I love you. &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lenny_Bruce\">Lenny Bruce<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"rgb(0, 0, 0);\">But your sense of urgency is well founded.
