I can understand why some have called it the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2149566\/\">best show on television<\/a>, with &#8220;scope, observational precision and moral vision of great literature.&#8221; I hope the dvd set of the 5th and final season, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2007\/SHOWBIZ\/TV\/11\/12\/apontv.thewire.ap\/index.html\">which ended<\/a> on January 6, 2008, is available soon and added to the Schenectady Public Library&#8217;s collection, so this cable-less soul can see how it all ended.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>As you may know, the show takes place in Baltimore, MD, a City that I only tend to think about while driving down I-95 to D.C. (when required to either bypass or traverse its tunnel).   However, much of the political maneuvering in <em>The Wire<\/em> involved the Baltimore mayor, so I couldn&#8217;t help but think of my old law school classmate Kurt Schmoke, who spent quite a few years as Baltimore&#8217;s mayor, and made ripples by arguing for drug legalization.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/04\/schmoke3.jpg\" height=\"57\" width=\"43\" \/>  Kurt popped up in one episode during Season 3 (shadowing his current academic role as dean of Howard Law School), which raised drug immunity-legalization issues. (a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/04\/04\/getting-rankled-over-rankings\/\">prior <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> post<\/a> featured Schmoke&#8217;s thoughts on law school rankings).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">after hours gym &#8211;<br \/>\na heavy bag sways slowly<br \/>\nin the window <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">     <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/barry-george-archive\/\"><font color=\"#ff0000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\"><strong>Barry George<\/strong><\/font><\/a><em><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\"> &#8211;<\/font><\/em><\/font><font size=\"1\"> <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.haikuharvest.net\/haiku\/2003\/2003A\/george.html\"><em><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\">Haiku Harvest<\/font><\/em><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\"> (Jan-Feb 2003)<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No, I don&#8217;t know where I&#8217;m going with this musing &#8212; chalk it up to my flu-addled brain.  So let me just transition to the real purpose of this post, which is to tell you about the winners of the 2008 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathydrinkwaterbetter.com\/HPCM.html\">Anita Sadler Weiss Memorial Haiku Awards<\/a>, which were announced last week  (and see the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/nc-haiku.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/anita-sadler-weiss-memorial-haiku.html\">NCHS Blog<\/a><\/em>), and the poems honored in the <a href=\"http:\/\/mdn.mainichi.jp\/culture\/wa\/etc\/haiku\/archive\/2008\/selection2007.html\">Mainichi News Annual Selection 2007<\/a> as the best haiku from that publication in 2007.<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"-0\"><font color=\"#000000\"><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"-0\"><font color=\"#000000\"><font size=\"-0\"><font size=\"-0\"><font color=\"#000000\"><font size=\"2\"><font color=\"#000000\"><font size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/crows.gif\" border=\"0\" height=\"66\" width=\"54\" \/> <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><em><strong> The Weiss Awards<\/strong><\/em> are sponsored annually by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathydrinkwaterbetter.com\/HPCM.html\">Haiku Poets of Central Maryland<\/a>, which serves haikuists in the greater Baltimore Metro Area [hey, there <em>was<\/em> a tenuous connection to <em>The Wire<\/em>].   Anita Sadler Weiss was a much-respected and loved Baltimore-based haiku poet, enthusiast, and teacher.   This year&#8217;s First Place prize went to a poem by Tony A. Thompson, of Lufkin, Texas.   As you know, we don&#8217;t reprint poems here without permission from the author, so I can&#8217;t share Tony&#8217;s &#8220;mountain stillness&#8221; haiku with you &#8212; but, I&#8217;ll provide a link as soon as one is available.<\/p>\n<p>Among the other winners, however, are three of our <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> Honored Guest Poets, allowing us to share them with you. It&#8217;s a fine example of half a haiku attached to a (not particularly interesting or creative) intellectual conclusion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/01\/mainichihaikuinenglishn.jpg\" height=\"24\" width=\"120\" \/>  <strong><em>T<\/em><\/strong>he <a href=\"http:\/\/mdn.mainichi.jp\/culture\/wa\/etc\/haiku\/archive\/2008\/selection2007.html\">Annual Selection 2007<\/a> from Mainichi editor Isamu Hashimoto:  Every month, you&#8217;ll find a dozen or so new poems on the English haiku page of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/mdn.mainichi.jp\/\">Mainichi Daily News<\/a><\/em>.  This year&#8217;s First Prize went to a poem by Hubertus Thum, of Barsinghausen, Germany, who had ten poems chosen for Mainichi publication in 2007.
