{"id":7983,"date":"2007-09-07T17:49:12","date_gmt":"2007-09-07T22:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/09\/07\/tcl-asks-what-can-law-schools-do-b"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:43","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:43","slug":"tcl-asks-what-can-law-schools-do-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/09\/07\/tcl-asks-what-can-law-schools-do-better\/","title":{"rendered":"<i>TCL<\/i> asks &#8220;what can law schools do better?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/09\/tcllogon.jpg\" \/>   <em><strong>T<\/strong><\/em>he newest edition of the bi-monthly online magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/thecompletelawyer.com\/main.php\"><em>The Complete Lawye<\/em>r<\/a> was posted this afternoon and focuses on a topic that should interest every segment of the legal community (as well as the public that uses its services): <em><a href=\"http:\/\/thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue5\/index.php\">What Can Law Schools Do Better?<\/a> <\/em>(September-October 2007, <a href=\"http:\/\/thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue5\/index.php\">Vol. 3 #5<\/a>)<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching released its report &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnegiefoundation.org\/publications\/pub.asp?key=43&amp;subkey=618\">Educating Lawyers<\/a><\/em>,&#8221; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/cleaweb.org\/\">Clinical Legal Education Association<\/a> published Univ. of South Carolina law professor Roy Stuckey&#8217;s &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/cleaweb.org\/resources\/bp.html\">Best Practices for Legal Education<\/a><\/em>&#8221; (which you can <a href=\"http:\/\/cleaweb.org\/documents\/Best_Practices_For_Legal_Education_7_x_10_pg_10_pt.pdf\">download here<\/a>).  As Stuckey explains in his new <em>TCL<\/em> article, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue5\/article.php?ppaid=4549\">Practicing Lawyers Can Change Legal Education<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Each study concluded that law schools over-emphasize teaching legal analysis and doctrinal knowledge, and virtually ignore teaching professional skills and values.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The reports advocated that law schools broaden their educational objectives and make greater use of experiential and context-based learning in order to better prepare students for the practice of law.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In an editorial titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue5\/article.php?ppaid=4442\">How Many Wake-up Calls Will It Take?<\/a>&#8220;, Don Hutcheson, the Editor\/Publisher of <em>The Complete Lawyer<\/em>, asks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> .. <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/09\/donhutcheson.jpg\" \/>   &#8220;In the face of this unrelenting challenge to change, how are law schools responding?  In this edition of TCL we hear from law school deans and professors from across the country, from large law schools and small, who share their insights, experience, and hope on the critical topic: What can law schools do better?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don highlights a quote from Chester Irving Barnard (1886\u20131961), author of the influential management book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Functions-Executive-30th-Anniversary\/dp\/0674328035\">F<em>unctions of the Executive<\/em><\/a>: \u201cWe hire people for their skills, but the whole person shows up for work.\u201d  He ends his <em>TCL<\/em> editorial with this plea:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think that notion is as important today as it was in Barnard\u2019s time\u2014perhaps more so. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue5\/article.php?ppaid=4443\"><em>TCL Weblog Directory<\/em><\/a> is an annotated, alphabetical list of over 110 law-related weblogs (blawgs) whose stated description  or mission falls within <em>TCL<\/em>&#8216;s scope: content that &#8220;focuses on the professionalism and quality of life and career issues that impact every lawyer\u2019s success and satisfaction.&#8221; They explain:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>  &#8220;The directory is divided into two segments <strong>Legal Life<\/strong> and <strong>Legal Marketing<\/strong>.  Legal Life covers weblogs whose mission includes Personal and Professional Development and Work\/Life Balance; while the Legal Marketing list includes weblogs that focus or feature aspects of legal marketing.  There are about 75 weblogs on the Legal Life list and 38 on Legal Marketing.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue5\/article.php?ppaid=4443&amp;apage=1#a420para3331\"><strong>Legal Life<\/strong> <\/a>&#8211; <em>weblogs featuring personal and professional development and work\/life balance<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue5\/article.php?ppaid=4443&amp;apage=6#a420para3336\"><strong>Legal Marketing<\/strong><\/a> &#8211;  weblogs that focus on or feature various aspects of legal marketing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/09\/tcllogo.jpg\" height=\"17\" width=\"150\" \/>  I first became familiar with <em>The Complete Lawyer<\/em> when approached by its editor Don Hutcheson to participate in its <a href=\"http:\/\/thecompletelawyer.com\/volume3\/issue4\/index.php\">The Graying of Lawyers<\/a> edition (July-Aug. 2007).    Since then, because <em>TCL<\/em> covers so many topics that are important for the profession and ultimately its consumers (take a look at the Focus topics in its <a href=\"http:\/\/thecompletelawyer.com\/main.php\">prior issues<\/a>), I&#8217;ve been trying to attract attention within the legal weblog community for  the publication.    To that end, I compiled <em> TCL&#8217;s <\/em>Weblog Directory.
