{"id":7767,"date":"2007-07-01T17:03:04","date_gmt":"2007-07-01T22:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/07\/01\/landscape-psycho-architecture\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:46","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:46","slug":"landscape-psycho-architecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/07\/01\/landscape-psycho-architecture\/","title":{"rendered":"landscape psycho-architecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0The\u00a0new July-August edition of <em>Harvard Magazine<\/em> has an interesting article in its Brief Life Vita series, on Frederick Law Olmstead, calling him the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2007\/07\/frederick-law-olmsted.html\">first landscape psychoarchitect<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Olmstead believed that introducing nature to the urban scene could be &#8220;prophylactic and therapeutic&#8221; &#8212; a cure for the &#8220;nervous tension, over-anxiety, hasteful disposition&#8221; of the city.\u00a0 The piece reminded me that Schenectady&#8217;s lovely little Central Park was designed by Olmstead, and that I could use a little\u00a0Olmsteadian therapy.\u00a0 So, I took a short drive over there this afternoon, and savored its Rose Garden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"45\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/07\/parkbench.jpg\" height=\"58\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0My lucky friend and frequent Honored Guest Poet, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/yu-chang-archive\/\">Yu Chang<\/a>, lives right across the street from the park (where we play bocce).\u00a0 It is often a source of haiku inspiration for Yu.\u00a0 Here are a few examples:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>duck pond<br \/>\nmaking small talk<br \/>\nwith strangers<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Central Park<br \/>\nthe echo of her voice<br \/>\nin every direction<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>someone&#8217;s hat<br \/>\nleft on a park bench<br \/>\nquiet afternoon<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>bumblebee<br \/>\ndeeper in the petunia<br \/>\nsummer heat<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>topiary garden<br \/>\na lantern<br \/>\nin bloom<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>after the rain\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/07\/yuchangkayakg.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nthe white lilac<br \/>\njust my height<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>shutter lag &#8211;<br \/>\njust bees<br \/>\non the blossoms<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.. by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/yu-chang-archive\/\">Yu Chang<\/a> &#8211;
