B1, $ub.)\u00a0 At the time of the arrest, the child had already been taken from the mother, Hope C. Maxwell (27 years old), by our county Child Protective Services, for unrelated reasons.\u00a0 It never occurred to me that\u00a0parental ID theft\u00a0would be a widespread problem.\u00a0 Apparently, it is.\u00a0 For example, see:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/WNT\/Business\/story?id=1590439&amp;page=1\">Identity Thieves&#8217; Newest Target Children<\/a>: Targeted Kids Often Learn of Destroyed Credit Years Later,&#8221; <em>ABC World News<\/em>, Feb. 7, 2006, where you will learn of a woman whose mother ran up $150,000 in debt on a credit care taken out in the child&#8217;s name, when\u00a0the girl\u00a0was 8 years old.\u00a0 The daughter only found out when she tried to buy a car at the age of 20.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideedition.com\/ourstories\/reports\/story.aspx?storyid=18\">Child Identity Theft<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<em>Inside Edition<\/em>, May 10, 2005, where you&#8217;ll meet Shiloh Puckett of Rockwall, Texas.\u00a0 Shiloh is ten, but is already\u00a0listed on credit reports as being $14,000, thanks to her Mother, who served six months in prison on forgery and fraud charges after running up the bad debt on at least 17 credit cards. Note: &#8220;Puckett insists she only used her daughter\u2019s credit to pay for necessities.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Young Entrepeneurs of America<\/em>: The same <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideedition.com\/ourstories\/reports\/story.aspx?storyid=18\"><em>Inside Edition<\/em> episode<\/a> focused on Bryce Dalton, whose father got Bryce a business license for a contracting company called \u201cDalton &amp; Sons\u201d,\u00a0when he was only three.\u00a0 Of course, daddy ran up unpaid debts related to the business, and to a few\u00a0credit cards in Bryce&#8217;s name.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"#1Mom\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/1Mom.gif\" \/>\u00a0If you want to be ID-theft savvy, and your mama didn&#8217;t teach you, go to the Federal Trade Commission&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/edu\/microsites\/idtheft\/\">Identity Theft Website<\/a>\u00a0, which has lots of information on how to DETER identity thieves by safeguarding your information; DETECT suspicious activity by routinely monitoring your financial accounts and billing statements; and DEFEND against ID theft as soon as you suspect a problem.\u00a0 You might want to take the <a href=\"http:\/\/onguardonline.gov\/quiz\/idtheft_quiz.html\">OnGuard Online ID Theft Quiz<\/a> (maybe with your kids).\u00a0 Also, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/11\/01\/identity-theft-security-freezes-fraud-alerts-and-more\/\"><em>shlep<\/em> has links<\/a>\u00a0to materials on identify theft and
