{"id":7573,"date":"2007-04-30T13:03:35","date_gmt":"2007-04-30T18:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/04\/30\/honoring-virginia-techs-dead\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:49","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:49","slug":"honoring-virginia-techs-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/04\/30\/honoring-virginia-techs-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"honoring Virginia Tech&#8217;s dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/04\/24\/around-here-silence-is-for-driving-not-grieving\/\">we mentioned<\/a> last week, today is being observed as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onedayblogsilence.com\/OneDayBlogSilence.com.html\"><em>One Day of Blog Silence<\/em><\/a>\u00a0at weblogs throughout the blogisphere to pay respect to the victims of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute massacre,\u00a0as well as\u00a0worldwide victims of violence.\u00a0 In general, the world could use more silence &#8212; mostly so that we can learn to listen better to eachother.\u00a0Rather than silence at this weblog today, however, I want to acknowledge:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>the deep feeling of\u00a0loss for the families, our nation, and the world, due to the deaths\u00a0of those 33 unique individuals at Virginia Tech;<\/li>\n<li>the realization that the VPI campus was\u00a0an excellent example of how the\u00a0love and desire for education can bring the world closer\u00a0together &#8212; with our nation serving a positive role nurturing learning and community;<\/li>\n<li>my growing frustration over groups who put grandiose or absolute assertions of\u00a0 individual rights over our society&#8217;s joint, interdependent, and fundamental\u00a0need to take reasonable, effective steps to protect\u00a0itself and its members\u00a0from violence of all kinds.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"window\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/glassdesign.gif\" \/> There is no single way to appropriately mourn any one person, much less so many, diverse and undeserving victims.\u00a0\u00a0And, mourning will have many meanings as the seasons and years pass.\u00a0 The best that I can do is this collection of\u00a0haiku and senryu from the <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/guest-poet-archives-subject-index\/\">Honored Guest<\/a> family of poets:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the first notes<br \/>\nsqueezed from bagpipes<br \/>\nsmall town parade<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>cricket sounds<br \/>\nrise into night<br \/>\nthe names of the dead<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;
